What does „Grundtvig“ mean?
The Danish philosoph, writer and educator Nikolai Frederik Severin Grundtvig (1783-1872) is the EU-programm’s eponym. Grundtvig is to be considered as the founder of the movement of the folk high schools („Volkshochschulen“) which have developed to be an alternative to the general education system. His concept of lifelong learning has spread worldwide.
Due to his forceful personality and gargantuan life’s work, he is undoubtedly the one who during the 19th century has influenced his contemporaries in Northern Europe and posterity the most.

What is the GRUNDTVIG-Programme about?
The GRUNDTVIG-Programme is one of four sub-programmes of the
Lifelong Learning Programme (LLP) of the European Commission. It serves adult education, like trainings and further education. The other three sub-programmes are
- COMENIUS for schools,
- ERASMUS for higher education and
- LEONARDO DA VINCI for vocational education and training.
